Captain Smith question
«
on:
July 29, 2010, 05:34:30 pm »
I have a question regarding Captain Smith. Was he going to be in command of Titanic on her return from New York or was his retirement due to start when she berthed at New York??
Also, who was in line to replace the Captain as the new commander of Titanic??

I think he was do to retire upon his return from New York. As far as to who was inline to relace him that I don't know.
Our man Jon will be the best to answer that one.

Smith's agreement was to bring
Titanic
back from New York then he would retire. I cannot think off hand to who is replacement was. I have read about, years back.

Jon, did they have to be a captain already then and be transfered to another ship? Were officers not promoted to the rank of captain, or was there a route to follow. Like 3rd officer to 2nd to 1st etc.

I thought that if Murdoch was to be promoted he would have had to cut his teeth on a smaller vessel and gain some valuable experience.
